About

Hi! My name is Liz Hughes and I’m in my latest incarnation as a fiction author. I was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1958 and had an ordinary working-class childhood, living with my mother, father, my older brother and younger sister.

I married and divorced at a very young age, then left Barrow in 1980 to see what the big wide world had to offer, moving from place to place in the UK with my second husband, usually managing public houses. Unfortunately, that also ended after 16 years, after which I went to Lancaster University to do a BSc Degree in 2000 at the age of 42!

Following that, I moved to Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire and had eight wonderful years with the love of my life, author and poet Glyn Hughes. After his untimely death in 2011, I took care of my mother for several years until she died of Alzheimer’s in 2018. I retired from work due to my own health problems but have discovered a new lease of life in writing – at last a career where I can work from home and be my own boss! I now share my life with my elderly cat Toni who is the perfect companion and flatmate. I spend my days reading and writing – who could ask for more?
